Muskrat Racing Dog Sports

I know what you’re thinking. Someone’s made a typo.  Muskrat Racing ? Muskrats are medium-sized semi-aquatic rodents native to North America. How on earth are most people even going to find a Muskrat, let alone race one?

Well, while it’s true that Muskrats are native to North America, they have also been introduced to many other parts of the world. Much to the ire of certain countries such as the Netherlands where the Muskrats have become a nuisance by damaging their dikes and levees!

Now in the past, dogs were used to control the Muskrat population by swimming after and catching them. Then someone had the bright idea of creating a new Dog Sport by encouraging their dogs to chase a lure pulled across a pool on a piece of string, and to call it  Muskrat Racing .

They use a lure of course because not everyone has ready access to a Muskrat when they need one. Apart from the fact that it would be considered inhumane, the dogs might get hurt because Muskrats can be vicious little critters who don’t take kindly to rabid canines what want to catch and kill them. Muskrats tend to be funny like that!
