Majorca Ratter Dog Breeds
Very little is known about this breed, but there seems a distinct similarity with the Gos Rater Valencià, also known as the Ratonero Valenciano or Valencian Rat Hunting Dog.
Apparently, back in the early part of the 20th Century, lots of Valencians migrated to Majorca, many taking with them their Valencian Ratters to keep their stables free of rats. (There’s a direct ferry across the Balearic Sea between Valencia and Majorca).
Since the Gos Rater Valencià is believed to have been around since the 16th Century and the Majorca Ratter hardly any time at all, and taking into account that both breeds look much the same, serve much the same function and in all probability, smell much the same, it seems not unreasonable to assume that – how can I put this? They’re the same surely!
By the way, if you have a Majorca Ratter and would be happy for your dog to feature on Dogipedia, please send us a photo using the form on the right.
