Coonhound Dog Types

The  Coonhound  is an American style of hunting dog and a member of the Hound group of dogs whose name is derived from the purpose for which it was originally developed. It was designed to hunt Raccoons.

Capable of hunting individually or as a pack, Coonhounds don’t actually catch their prey, but ‘tree’ them, forcing the prey up a tree from where they can be shot by hunters.

Scent Hounds and a ‘type’ of dog rather than a breed, Coonhounds are divided into several different and quite distinct breeds:

  • Black and Tan Coonhound
  • Bluetick Coonhound
  • American English Redtick Coonhound
  • Plott Hound
  • Redbone Coonhound
  • Treeing Walker Coonhound
